Got the new dizzy in the wagon, seems to have taken care of the backfire. Since I'm still not supposed to be doing anything because of the surgery I had the boys help me change it out. With some minor adjustments we seem to be in business again! cheers

Thinking of trying to find a 700r4 and swap it in before the honest Charleys run. Any suggestions? How hard is this swap? Never done one before.

What ya got now, Turbo 350? Not too hard, need proper bracketry on carb/FI for the TV cable. Maybe different speedo gear and shifter linkage. Should bolt up other than moving cross member.
I love those malibus. my neighbor has 2- 2 door drag cars 79-81's, I love seeing them out.
Sleeper wagon would be cool to have cheers

Got a th400 in it. Gonna change to a floor shifter anyway! So the linkage wouldn't be an issue. I have a soft spot for Malibus as well. This wagon is my second Malibu. Mis my more door, and found this wagon it was love at first sight.

I'm getting very frustrated! The wagon ran great up until this evening and then pow. It starts backfiring again! I'm at a loss.everything seems to be fine other than the backfiring!

On the run at times it seemed to being running really rich. Too rich for ignition break down. I was thinking more like a screwed up carb. Do you have another carb to just try out?

@John just put a new distributor in, timing was ok. Haven't checked it today. I've thought it might be the cam, but after I replaced the dizzy and it ran fine I had ruled it out. @Steve, I don't have another carb, at least not fresh one. I'll have one of mine rebuilt. At this point I'm willing to try about anything.

Does it run ok other than backfiring and when does it do it? When you accelerate or at an idle or just randomly with terrible power loss

Randomly, but more so when accelerating. Definite power loss.

Checked the rockers. I should clarify. Only a loss of power after it starts backfiring.it only does it after it warms up!

Don't let it get you down. It's something simple. It's just hard to figure it out without looking at it in person.

It might be on the DUH list but what about EGR and the PCV. Maybe a huge vacum leak that comes and goes?

Checked the pcv valve. Could be a vacuum leak I guess. Hadn't thought of that as all the vacuum lines are new. But that's a possibility

Check the coil. I had one break down and do just that it would idle but as soon as you gave it gas it would fall on its nose and back fire. split the mufflers open like a tin can.....back to the muffler shop it went. I thought it was the carb until I changed it out and did the same thing.
ether way hope you find the problem.

Finally was able to meet up with Butch to pick up a carb. Changed out the carb and readjusted the timing. Still need to check the output on the alternator and lash the valves. So far so good.. Just wanted to say thanks Butch!

Valves lashed, car is running better. Checked the charging system, only putting out 11 volts. So i need an alternator, no big deal. Still need to find a transmission though. Fingers crossed, something will come up.

Was in the middle of changing out the power steering rack and pump on the wagon and it starts to rain, hard. Oh well, there's tomorrow after work.
