Same here....i think Johnny Van Zant and whats left of the crew should quit calling themselves Skynyrd....Lynyrd Synyrd died with Ronnie Van Zant....Reb Stew wrote:Favorite group.

I agree! Johnny couldn't make it on his own so he stepped into Ronnies shoes.

Re: 35 Years ago Today (Oct 20th)
I think there is only one original member left that still plays in the band. Ed King is still alive. He had a heart transplant earlier this year.

Gary Rossington is the only original member left in the current band.He and Ronnie wrote most of the old music. For some reason they never let Ed King back in

I like Whiskey rock a roller and Am I losin. I used to play a lot of Skynyrd with the Band I was in. Those two were the most fun to play for myself. Hard to pick a favorite....

If you find the song Michelle you will hear a very early band before they had their name Lynyrd Skynyrd. You can hear a different tone for any band of that era. Besides Southern Rock it has a Blues sound too it as well.

Re: 35 Years ago Today (Oct 20th)
Didn't plan it like this but I spent last Saturday (the 20th) reading a book written by Skynyrd's tour manager who was on the plane when it went down and survived to tell about it. It's called "Turn It Up" and was written by Ron Eckerman. Good read even if you don't believe everything the guy writes is the complete truth. Didn't realize I finished the book on the anniversary of the crash until I saw this thread. Crazy....
Never saw the original Skynyrd but got to see the reformed version a few times, it still wasn't the real thing. Like Molly Hatchet without Danny Joe Brown... Got to meet Johnny Van Zandt and get my picture taken with him at Riverbend in the nineties. Nice guy.
Puddin Head recommends checking out Blackberry Smoke and you should. After you do that listen to the Drive By Truckers "Southern Rock Opera" from beginning to end. It roughly follows the rise and fall of Skynyrd in some pretty interesting songs. If you grew up in the late seventies or early eighties listening to southern rock it will send chills down your spine. I'm listening to the song "Cassies Brother" as I write this.......

Re: 35 Years ago Today (Oct 20th)
My take on the new versions of older bands. You gotta look at them from a philosophical point of view. Imagine if the plane crash hadn't happened. Would Skynyrd be as legendary as they are now? If they were still playing with that line-up, what would they sound like? I'm guess, pretty much what the "new" version sounds like.
I put new in quotation marks because if you want to be realistic, this version has been around longer then the original version. 25 years.
Same thing can be said for Hatchet. What if Danny Jo hadn't stepped away to deal with his diabetes? Would Hatchet even exist now? Come back to edit this - The second time Danny Jo stepped away he hand picked his replacement. That has to mean something right?
Oh , and I've been a DBT fan for awhile. My daughter calls me and starts telling me about this cool band she found and the great album they had out. I had to break the news to her that the CD came out while she was still elementary school. Keep Southern Rock Opera in rotation in the shop CD player.
