Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
Got a lot done today. Replaced the ball joints/upper arms and front motor mount on my wife's car. Have to keep the daily's up and running and safe. Well... enough on that.
I was able to get a lot of work done on the Old's. I wasn't able to get the brake lines hooked up but all the brakes components are on!
Here was my test fit inside my wheel a couple weeks ago just to make sure my wheels would fit. Here you can see the back side and how the custom bracket works.
And now to the install process...
Stock bare spindle.
This is the scarebird kit. It uses the stock spindles and is a direct bolt on piece. No modifications required. Here is the custom bracket bolted on.
All of the components are from different vehicals and can be purchased from any parts store. These rotors are from a 1/2 ton 1995 Silverado.
The brake calipers are from a 1970 Eldorado

Looks good.
Do you use the original lines or will you have to swap them out?

Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
Got the Olds back out. Felt good to drive it even if I just drove it a block and a half home.
Ready to start stripping the body of paint and finding what all needs fixed. Anybody up for a sanding work session and help me knock it out in just a couple hours?
Only problem is I don't have a big enough compressor to run a DA. Anybody able to help me get a jump on this? This will be a totally new adventure for me. Looking for guidance. I'm a quick learner and work hard. I'm planning on getting all the trim off the car a little each day. I will be buying primer sometime this week to have on hand. Looking to get the body stripped and shot with primer no matter what body rot is there. Then go back and spot fix the different areas a little bit at a time over the summer.

Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
Didn't get much done on the Olds like I wanted to. Ran into carb problems early on. Ended up just being a hole in one of the floats. Got that fixed. Then quickly realized the radiator just won't cut it anymore. Had it fixed a couple years ago but it just can't do the cooling that is needed.
So I will be saving up for a new radiator to have in it for next season. Going to get an aluminum rad.
We get did in it last night and cruised around town. Had date night and went to the gangster dueling piano bar. Rolled up to drop my wife off and the staff went nuts over the car. So much so the owner asked us to park the car right in front and that he wouldn't have it towed. Prime parking for free just for driving Olds...heck yea!

Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
I had to replace a few floats in my 53 Olds, even with being brass gas managed to get in a couple and glad I had a few parts carbs. I still have a few parts carbs if you ever need any more parts, there are two different sets of floats,56 on back and 57 to 64.

Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
In between the rain this evening I got my carb put back together. Had carb issues at the end of the season last year. Was kinda fed up with it and was thinking about trying to figure out how to adapt a different carb. It was going to be difficult and a lot of fab work. Between the carb base on the intake not being standard and the crazy carb accelerator linkage and trans linkage I thought I'd give the factory one another go.
Glad I did. I thought the whole carb was gummed up. Found out everything still looked as good as when I went through it last spring. It ended up just being a torn accelerator pump cup. Found a source for a better replacement cup. Also read to really try and polish the inside walls where the pump goes and add a little grease to the top of the cup.
The space felt pretty smooth but the polishing really made a big difference! Put it all back together, tossed in some gas, hit the key and she started right up!! Took her around the block. Road pretty good for sittin all winter. Got caught out in a down pour. Had to pull over and wait it out. Brought her home and felt really good about the success.
Next step... radiator replacement. Got all my measurements, hope to order it next week and swapped out as soon as it comes in.

Re: 1955 Oldsmobile 88
This time last year we had been heavy involved in getting our house in Newport ready for market while we were looking for a new house. Now that all that is over and we are settled in at our new place, I am trying to get the ol' girl back up and running and reliable.
My boys helped me get the hood off the car. Trying to split things up so that I have things to work on when it's raining, and then switch back to the outside needs when we get the nice days.
On Saturday I was able to get the new lower radiator bracket where I want it. Just need to finish the top brackets and install the new hoses. Pulled the carb off and brought it into the house. Plan on going through it the beginning of this week through the rain.
