58' Impala Convertible Runs!!!
Hey guys and gals. Just some info. on my dad's 58'. My dad bought this car in 1962, here in Falmouth, from a used car lot. It had just landed on the lot that weekend, and my dad fell in love right away. The car lot was closed over the weekend and he went to work Monday, stressed and no sleep, worrying and knowing that the car would be gone when he got off work. Long story short, he traded his red and white 55' Belair Hardtop and ,I believe 1200.00, for the 58'. This car was built into a mild custom shortly after purchased new and the previous owner had spent all his time and 20,000.00 on this car. His wife left him, along with kids, over this car! The car was shown and won trophies at the first 2 Cavalcade of Customs in 1960 and 1961 at Music Hall. It was in a few magazines at the time also. The car was painted 1960 Cadillac Hampton Blue (Silver Blue) with a gold stripe in the main side trim. All trim removed from the side, except the main side trim. It was nosed and decked with electric doors and electric trunk. It also had shortened 59' Caddy taillights. The inside was gold with blue roll and pleated inserts in the seats and door panels. dash was blue with a spider web striped on the passenger side. And, of course, it had a white top. It was also lowered all the way around with gold steel wheels and Spider caps and small trim rings. Power was a 61' Corvette 283 with a 1960 Borg Warner 4-speed. Long story shorter, he went into the Army in 64' and left it with his sister and her husband to take care of. Got out of the Army in 66' to return to a car that wasn't as nice as when he left (electric door motors burnt out and a wire attached to the inside door handles that were run uo through the cozy wings with a large washer tied to the end to pull the open.) This was just a few of the problems. He sold the car to them for a few hundred dollars and within 3 years it was pushed to the holler behind the house along with another 58' conv. There is where it was used for BB gun practice and a home for lots of Gods small creatures over the 10 years or so. When I was about 10 years old, dad decided he wanted the old car back. 30 Years after being removed from the holler, this past Saturday, my dad drove (not pushed as usual) his beloved "Blue Ice" down to the end of his road and back (about 1/4 mile total). It has been 43 years since he drove this car and to say this was a moment just isn't enough. It's not finished yet, but it's closer now than ever. The body is done and painted and all of the chrome and stainless is back on. Still needs the new top put on and carpet and some other minor interior things finished. It is now powered by what he always wanted in it back in the day. A 409/425 hp. engine and a Muncie 4-speed now FILL the engine compartment. The exhaust work is next on the list of things to do. I'll get some pictures posted soon. I'll keep you updated and maybe I can talk him into going on a couple of cruises this year. Thank you and as my dad would say, Keep The Shiney Side Up!

That is a really cool hot rod story. I'm glad your Pops is still into the car stuff. I bet he was digging the first ride after all these years.

Can't wait to see some pictures. I think the 58 Chevy has been over looked for years, they're a lot neater than the years on either side. Maybe I feel that way because it was a one year only design. Cool story, and glad that your father got to put his long awaited 409 in it.

Re: 58' Impala Convertible Runs!!!
You should be very proud. It's a great lookin' car and the history make it even cooler. I traded a 71 Vega years ago for a 57 Buick for my dad. He tinkered with it for a few months but just couldn't get back into the grove. He said he was just to old to fool with hot rods anymore. He ended up giving me the car back. I tried to talk him into keeping it but there was no way. It broke my heart but I took it back. I figured it would be something we could do togther. I can tell that Steve is stoked that you have the car and thats cool too. Have fun with it.
