66 F250 Empty 66 F250

Post by junkyardjeff July 8th 2008, 5:41 am

I started to take it apart for the installation of the 460,I got most of the front sheetmetal except for the pass fender which had a bolt that would not come out. Its near the door at the top of the fender and now that the rest is off I will probably have to use a pry bar to force the fender off and repair the damage later. I think some think I am nuts for installing such a big motor with gas prices so high but I would think it would suck more gas with a small motor then the big one,I should have the old motor and trans out wendsday and get the frame cleaned up before installing the new motor. Along with the 460 its getting power steering and power disc brakes plus a front and rear sway bar and it should be painted before it hits the road again. Jeff

It had one of those slide in nuts on a clip that spun but I was able to force it out and the fender is off,I did get the motor and trans unbolted and its ready to pull tonight after work. I am going to try to get the new motor in late this week or early next week. Jeff

Motor and trans are out along with the motor mount stands and clutch linkage, going to clean the grease off the frame tomorrow and clean up a P/S box. Before I install the motor I am going to install a P/S box and make steering column work since the P/S box is longer,I willl have to shorten the column a little and use a P/S shaft which I have but I am not cetain I will use the automatic column as I would like to find a long lokar shifter if I can find one reasonably priced. Frame is cleaned up and painted and the p/s box is in and the 460 mounts are also in,I decided to get a lokar shifter and use the original column and have the brackets mounted on the trans. This weekend I am going to clean up the firewall and get it painted before installing the motor early next week and the motor cleaned up good and is going in as is since its was painted after it got rebuilt and I dont want to get carried away since its a work truck. The 460 is sitting in but will needs to be hooked up,I will have to redrill holes in the frame for the trans crosssmember since its sitting a couple inches back. I probably wont work on it much this week as I have the 55 on stands to repair a couple leaks and get the E brake working before this weekend,I am planning on taking it to the family reunion sunday. This weekend I will be busy with the reunion sunday and a old truck show saturday so the 66 wont get worked on untill monday. Jeff

The holes in the frame for the crossmember have been drilled and the motor has been tightened down so its time to start hooking everything up. I was originally planning on using a one piece drive shaft but it was too short so I put the front diive shaft up in ity and it will work so I will keep the two piece to keep costs down,I might have to get about 3/4 taken off the front half since the yoke is all the way in the trans but since it needs a new carrier bearing I will have both done at the same time and should be cheaper then having a new one piece made. Next to be done is hook up the lokar shifter and make new cooler lines and se if i can get the original throttle cable to work and then its time to get out the new inner fenders and core support and have them blasted and painted and maybe having it running in a couple weeks,it wont see the road for some time as I have to put disc brakes on and front and rear sway bars but I hope to have all that done by october and then its time for body work and paint. I have all about done under the truck except for making new trans cooler lines, the lokar shifter is in and hooked up and I had to move the hole in the trans hump cover back about a 1/2 inch and have it where I can use the original boot. I was wanting to use a one piece drive shaft but the one I got is too short but the front half from the donor truck fit but was a little too long as it was all the way in the trans so its getting shortened a inch and a new carrier bearing and U joint installed, tomorrows job is to make the new cooler lines and hook up everything on the motor and then send out the new innner fenders and core support to be blasted and then I will paint them and then its time to work on the disc brakes and sway bars. Its got 3.54 gears now,it originally had 4.10s and I replaced them about a year ago. Even with the 3.54s the 352 only got about 10 to 12 MPG and the 460 has more torque so I figure I should get better mileage if I keep my foot out of it. Jeff

Since I could not get the 5/16 tubing bent without kinking for the trans cooler lines I decided to order pre bent lines I needed something to do so I got out the new core support and inner fenders to see how they fit,I am using a 65 core support since the 65 radiaor mounts like the 70s 460 huge radiator does but I found other small differences and some modifications needed to be do before I could use the 66 battery tray. I want to get all modifications done before all the new parts get blasted and painted and they fit good and the huge radiator will work, while the new sheetmetal is on the truck I will set up the brake booster and run some brake lines to the proportioning valve so I can make sure they clear everything and test fit a few parts too. Ran into another road block, the exhaust manifolds that were advertised on ebay as for a truck are for a car and wont work so I will have to get another set. I can get new ones for lees the headers so I might do that or go to modoc next saturday and get a set off a van that has a 460 in it,no wonder I got those manifolds cheap since people who knew what they were looking for passed on them. The drivetrain is in and all buttoned up so now its time for body work, tonight I started to grind on the roof and the rust is a little tough. Its going to take me a few days to get the roof to bare metal and I have to dig out the body caulk along the drip rail.

The cab and front sheet metal has been taken down to bare metal and in epoxy primer with urethane on top waiting to be blocked, got the bed on a frame that has been made into a trailer and now going to weld up some holes before going to the blaster. There is no way I am going to take it down to bare metal like I did on the front half and I hope to have it done by the end of the summer,I am going to get the bumpers and mirror backets blasted and powder coated. I probably wont drive it untill next march when the tags expire on the beater truck as I dont want to keep insurance on both as the insurance company get enough money from me now.

Today I finally got the holes welded up in the bed so now it will be off to the blaster and then maybe it will have paint on it by the end of the summer, once it gets painted I am going to put the bed back on and let it sit for a couple months for the paint to cure and put it togather over the winter.

Now that mom went to New York for a month the 37 is in her garage and I got the bed in mine and started to sand down the sides,I was originally going to have the whole bed blasted but decided to take the sides down to bare metal myself and get the inside and front blasted. I was advised against having the sides blasted as they are easy to get warped if the blaster does not pay attention and I dont want more work,in a couple days I should have both sides to bare metal and in epoxy primer and then its to the blaster.

Mom came back from NY early so I need to get moving and get the 37 out of her garage, got the bed back from the blasters today and got what they blasted epoxied. On the way home from work I detoured over to TSC and picked up a quart of Ford tractor blue and sprayed it on the front of the bed and around the tailgate area and like the color so thats what I am going to paint it along with a white roof. If the tractor paint does not work out I can always scuff it down and shoot it with other paint.
