Picked up a 4x4

One day I was helping the neighbor with the air ride seat in his semi and he was asking what a 2003 tahoe is worth. He bought it off his friend who bought a new truck. My neighbor just wanted to make some fast money off it. So I bought the tahoe pretty reasonable. Been hit in the quarter panel. Already got a new wheel and hitch to replace the rusty one. Almost ready to turn 117k miles. When it gets up to running temp the rpm wants to rev up and down 200-500 rpm.

Possibly a sticky idle air control, Check data stream and watch voltages, see if it changes accordingly.

Looks like a decent newer truck. 1/4 shouldn't be hard to fix if you want to fool with it.

Had the hatch open the other day and turn around to step right into it with my forehead. Laid out on the ground with a bleeding head. Found a quarter and rear bumper for it.

That would bite. At least you didn't get an eye.

Looks like a decent vehicle. I am glad I have the barn doors on my 'Hoe, never really liked the tailgate/hatches.

revving could be idle aircontrol, TPS, or even possibly the temp sensor.

That's a smart buy right there. You'll enjoy the 5.3L under the hood. BTW when its time to change the transfer case fluid use the BLUE stuff. No exceptions. Use exactly what they call for from the factory.

yeap ,had to replace the TC in my Tahoe due to PO putting standard Dextron in it

The blue stuff has special modifiers in it for the Autotrac clutches.

What is the blue stuff? I'm guessing its from the dealer? This thing has too much electronics on it for me. Dad has a 200 Silverado that has the 5.3 in it. Love it! I'd like to have a solid front axle 4x4. Previous owner of theis tahoe was a smoker. Trying to get the smell out. I like the 88-94 gm trucks better. Benn working on the 92 chevy 1/2 ton that my dad bought brand new.

You want two liters of the Auto Trac fluid for the transfer case. GM#12378508.

Get a box of fabric softener sheets and stick them all over inside. In a few day, the smoke smell will be gone

Yep, 2 quarts of the stuff Nanook listed. Drain, then refill. Good to find a long piece of hose that fits over the nozzle on the bottle or use some type of little pump, it's tight up under there to fill....and I have a 3" body lift and it's still tight.

Solid Axle would be cool, but GM got rid of those in the the trucks in 88 and SUV's in 92. I miss my ole K5!!!
There are kits to be able to do a SAS, but man it looks liek a lot of work.

With the advent of many variations of "technological improvements", we are now blessed with many components that manufacturers claim "customers want", but as a result, we are now over loaded with inventory items like various fluids for things like transfer cases, and transmissions, that are mandatory to insure the long life of these components. It's now wonder that dealers and auto parts supply houses around the globe never have anything in stock anymore, there are probably 20 different types of auto and manual gear box fluids required to provide coverage for MOST of the vehicles now being driven. And if you have an old vehicle, (and who of us on here don't) sometimes finding the right fluid can be a real problem. Example- trying to find Ford/Mercon type F trans fluid.... I have to special order it in now. I think it's gotten WAY out of hand. But that's just me.

yea, I have to Use "Mopar 4+" tranny fluid and G5 antifreeze in our Jeep which of course cost more than anything else.

Replaced the bad wheel and still have a wobble. Going to tear the rear end apart tomorrow to see if I need just an axle shaft or whole rear end.

Actually they still had solid front axles until '92 in the trucks too, if it's a crew cab.
I like the newer trucks, but yeah, WAY too much electronic BS.
I'm afraid to own a rig that I can't fix.

Yea, the 1 ton and the K5's still had it until 92, in general though, they switched in 88.

Sold the Tahoe the other day. I fixed it mechanically and drove it about 1,000 miles. Got 15.15 mpg driving down the Interstate at 65mph.

Good deal. I'm lucky to get 12mpg doing down hill in neutral with the motor off. The lift and bigger tires "may be" the the culprit
