Single Stage Paint Opinions Empty Single Stage Paint Opinions

I am looking at a single stage paint system by SEM in their Hot Rod custom color series. It is a matte finish, and is supposed to be a 2 coat and done system. I plan on using etcher, primer, sealer under the base coat...

So I have heard some single stage paints fade quick, don't ever look clean, etc, etc... When I ask what brand, what prep, etc. I get no answers.... when I ask how long ago they say at least 4 years ago or something similar when the flat systems were just coming to mainstream and people like me would go in their garage and spray the cheapest paint possible without proper prep etc...

But has anyone used a recent single stage paint with HVLP with success? This is not a bottom line paint - but it is not the high end either. They claim to have great mar protection and resist fading... They make a hot rod clear that I could spray over, but it is not a required step....

What do you all think? Anyone know any painters whom have used these?

Paint is funny. If you are not going glossy do it as cheap as possible and forget it. Depending on the brand and more so on the color you may get some fading. Some last for a long time others don't.

We have used the single stage on my brothers Jeep.
It turned out good. The fadding.... He sold the jeep 3yrs after we painted it and it still looked good. If you want the paint to look good it is ALL about the prep! Any paint that you use these day is not cheap. Any metalic in the color?

Nason? Without the metallic it will be easier to fix mistakes. ( Runs and bugs doing the backslide) 3 cans are they gallons? If your not using Nason check into it its not a bad paint. 1 of the big manufacturer's make it. Just don't have the warranty. and if your not certified they don't honer the warranty anyway.

Nason is a cheap paint but it has a killer shine to it and it hold up really well to time.. I have used it a lot and never buffed it out. KOI sells it around here and you can get the kit for a great price. Andrew remember just because it's costly doesn't make it good. Money saved on paint can go else where.
I know you don't want the gloss so I'm not sure it would be Nason unless they have come up with some new colors I haven't seen.

I went with Nason for all my etcher, primer, sealer.

This is the link: http://www.semproducts.com/product-catalog/color-horizons/hot-rod/low-voc-hot-rod-colors/

quart size

It is SEM Hot Rod paint, and I am ordering through KOI on their recommendation. I had the Elite Kit but they do not have the color I want in a flat. It would have been more work and a little more cash to buy a flat clear for the gloss color that would have worked. That is another option if it really is worth the extra work and money.

Yea, they said Nason would have no undesired interactions with the SEM.. Only recommending blocking after spraying primer which I planned on doing anyhow.

Blocking will let the paint lay nice and flat!
Sounds like they have you on the right path.
How many pounds you spraying with?

I am gonna play around with it when it comes time to prime and see what goes well.. First time trying to paint a car so I am sure I will learn a lot - hopefully mostly before topcoat.
