The Next Project

So when we went to the 40 for $40, I knew the clutch in my Z06 was getting weak and taking it down the track a few times confirmed it.

I just ordered the last of the parts today. The long tubes, X and intermediate pipes have to come off to get it apart and I decided that I'm just going to go ahead and replace the Stainless Works headers and pipes with LG Super Pro headers & pipes. The Stainless Works had a cracked weld that leaked when I bought the car so I took them off & had what I considered the weak points reinforced and I also had the headers and pipes ceramic coated. I've been hearing another exhaust leak so they're coming off and the Super Pros are going on. Enough is enough.

I may start tearing it down next Tuesday, or maybe sooner.

I'm not afraid of work but I just cringe thinking about ripping into one of those.

Not really looking forward to it but I know I'll do it right, and if I hired someone to do it, I know it wouldn't be 100% correct.

Not nearly as difficult as transplanting an old chevy body to a newer Caprice though.

Transplanting the 49 sounds easier to me. lol

I guess it does look like I cheaped out on the jack, and maybe I did. I bought it so long ago I don't even remember where I got it. The reason I like it is that it's compact and I can put it in its case and set it on a shelf. The problem with the Z06 is that even to get started with a jack as small as the one in the photo I have to drive the car onto a series of 2 x 6s & get the tires 3" off the ground.

I just checked my PowerBall ticket & I didn't hit it, so I guess I have to put off the Jay Leno style garage for another week or so.

but have to agree i'd figure you had some badass jack and was doing this inside... guess with the weather we have had this year your using that for motivation lol

I don't have a place where I can work inside. Wish I did. The garage is full of junk including the '63. Wish I had a 2 post lift too.

I keep a Kwik Lift at my brother's house and I have a big 2 1/2 ton jack over there too. None of that will help with this project. The body has to come up and the suspension, tranny, and torque tube has to come down.

Driveer Side Header out the bottom.

Passenger Side Header out the Top.

Torque Tube Plate and Clutch Inspection Plates Removed. That's it for today.

those headers look like a long mid length header...

the torque tube plate really have 50000 bolts holding it on?

That's the way most of the C5 headers are made. It's a bit deceptive since the headers have some of the transition pipes attached to them. I doubt that the Kooks in my Camaro are any longer, just configured a little differently. The LG Super Pro's have slightly longer tubes and a merge collector.

Think I'm taking the day off. The old back is feeling sort of iffy.

Figured my back could handle removing interior pieces and the shifter today.

Shift pattern button has to be pryed up carefully with a small screw driver.


Once that button is removed, there is a wedge that keeps the shifter knob centered. I see people on line struggeling with this all of the time. I just put an allen wrench up under the lip and pry it up.


This is what it looks like.

You have to remove the interior temp sensor cover to get to one of the screws that holds the console and radio bezel assembly.

Console out, shifter exposed and removed.

Lookin good

Shocks, Tie Rod ends, and lower Ball Joints removed.

Wiring, Brake Lines, Tranny mount, & mounting bolts removed from the rear cradle with tranny jack in place.

Cradle is out & half shafts are removed from the rear end after the rear was drained.
That's it for this dinosaur for today. The hydraulic line is disconnected from the slave, so the next part of the process should be removing the rear, tranny, and torque tube & then pulling the pressure plate, clutch, & flywheel. I'm going to take the original over and have it checked to see if it was zero balanced & then I'll go from there as far a s balancing the new assembly.

It's pretty hot out there Ken, don't get heated. If you end up needing a hand to put something up on the jack or whatever just let me know.

Thanks for the offer Steve. I think I can get it disassembled by my self. Reassembling the torque tube to the clutch housing is always the tricky part.
