Re: Yeah, it really is that bad....
I picked up a frame, complete front axle, front spring, 2 rear leaf springs for a conversion, extra front beam, brake pedal assembly w/modern cylinder adapter and m/c all for $200.
Here's the problem, the frame is a bit worse than I thought. It has a horribly hacked MII grafted on and the crossmember is trash.
So I think I'm going to make a new one from 2x4 tubing. I can use the old frame as a pattern. I've never done it before but there's a first time for everything.

Re: Yeah, it really is that bad....
Wow yeah that is a horrible MII job. The rest of it looks decent though. If it is still relatively square why not just build a new section from the X-member forward? Shouldn't be too bad, and there are a couple companies that sell new dropped front crossmembers for those chassis. Either way you definitely didn't get hurt on the deal, but it may save you some money and time...

I priced 2x5x.188 tubing today, $4.40ft. Two 24' sticks are $211.00 and they have to order it. I'm really leaning toward building a frame with a full cage and then dropping the body on and flooring afterward.

The price of steel has came down some from a year + ago, it's still pretty hi compared to before the price went through the roof.

Check out this guy's '40 build.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=335174
I've been PMing with him, he hooked me up with a measured drawing of a 36-40 frame.
http://www.wescottsauto.com/Tech/frame_specs.html
His frame is absolutely kickass.

I was following that build when he first started but lost track of it from where I don't get on the HAMB that much. I think it looks cool with the lid lower.

So was that John Graf's old Ford? I've known him for years. That's where the "Falcon Eddie" came from.

Yeah, it was Graf's. Oney said he kept the frame and put a different body on it.

Re: Yeah, it really is that bad....
Going to pick up 2 5x2x.188 24ft sticks of steel for the frame today. Also getting 12' of 8x4x.250 for my English wheel frame. I got materials to build a pair of bucks last weekend but haven't had the time (read ambition) to do anything this week.
I did get a title for it so that's one less headache. I also got a grill and steering box last week and have a deal in the works for a set of front fenders and inners for doing some metal work, but I need to get a hammer form built first.
I just need to get off my a$$.

idea
if it's to torn up or warped to make a nice rod, maybe make a 1960's
style circle track/dirt track looking street legal race car.
seen this done and it looks WAY cool
look on the hamb, search 60's-70's vintage oval track modifieds and a bunch of pics of these style race cars show up.
several old fords in this site.
there is a 1934 ford here in tacoma, wa that was a real dirt car made into a street car, looks awsome. my friend has a street legal sprint car, wings and all. also several sprint cars around the U.S A are made into road legal rides and a there's few dwarf cars, too.

Nothing has changed. I haven't worked on it since February. I was trying to get the Camaro going before Summer ends but now that's on the back burner too. The economy pretty much has me screwed. I moved the 40 to the shed today and made room to wrench on cars at the house.

Re: Yeah, it really is that bad....
The roof work you done so far is awesome work , I really enjoyed reading this whole thread and watching the progress , it gave me some inspiration on getting my 70 G.P. done , it also needs some metal work done but once you see something that looks bad and then see how it can turn out really gives hope to an old project , thanks for posting , and good luck with finishing it .

Hey 1/2 Done.............thanks again for beating on the door and for the wheelchair. I took it to the car wash like you said. Sad to say but it was a big hit at home. I'm sure it'll get used.

Thanks. Just read up on metalshaping and have at it. If I can do it anyone can.
