Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
Danny and me were talking about this picture the other day. If you go to the left and take the shortcut through the woods you were at my house on Park Ave. To the right was Onterio's. It was later called Rinks. Great place to grow up as a kid. I walked across that 4 lane to play pinball at Onterio's more times than I can count. That little plaza had a movie theater in it too. It's where the old sears use to be. Funny to see a President in an open car too. Times sure have changed!

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
ive seen this picture before and its amazing how not only how the times have changed with presidents riding in open cars but also the difference in the sceneria. if it wasnt for the curve you would never think that this is in south newport. the hill is gone the church is gone, and we sure dont see kick (BEEP) cars like that anymore just acruising

St. Frances. I uses to ride my bike in the parking lot all the time. It's a shame what progress will do. Drop 60 or so houses, some over 100 years old. Ours was take out St. Frances park. A place where many, many kids used the swimming pool, played on the playground and played baseball. Dropped St. Frances School to the ground and what do we get in return? Kroger and Target. Big whoop!JRiggs wrote: the hill is gone the church is gone

I saw Star Wars in the theater there when I was a kid! I ate at Roy Rogers where Taco Bell now sits. I used to live up on Vine. That house burned down in 71 or 72. We barely got out alive.

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
What part of Vine did you live on? Up on the hill or coming down towards Grand Ave? You was right at our back door. It is crazy memories. I loved it up on the hill, as we called it. We was in Newport but it seemed to be away from the rest of town. Every day I'd stop in at Rakers Tires to get a drink out of their water fountain. That was the coldest water in town. Do you remember Bruce and Bobby Hightchew by any chance? They lived across the street from Wiedemann Mansion.Hellvis wrote:I saw Star Wars in the theater there when I was a kid! We were near the top, on the east side of the street. I used to drink from that fountain too, but I don't remember the Hightchews.

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
No secret and no biggie. Just a little funny. John had that 68 1/2 Fastback Mustang GT. Factory big block car. It was pretty cool for a beater. We had put a motor in it up by his house. Normal thing using a come along and a chain hooked into a tree that was next to the street. We put in a cammed out 351 4V Cleveland. We did our normal thing and beat on the car all weekend. Through the week John would get on it at times like we all did back then. One evening he had the car out and was going by Frisch's. Frisch's next to Nelters.??? For the young pups Speedway gas station next to Nelters was a Frisch's car hop and then later the hop was just a lot Anyways he stopped at the light and someone was checking out the car. He slid the 4 speed into 1st and took off. Banging gears as he went. He was moving on. Just about that time the hood wiggles and whooopp. It shoots straight up off the car and flys in the air about 10 feet, over the Mustang and comes crashing to the ground. Do ya think he was mad? Everyone knows how pissed John would get about stuff. He gets turn around so he can get his hood. He gets by Nelters rolling and side steps it. The car gets away from him and it sends the Mustang across the street sideways towards the gas pumps, the ones that use to be in front of the store. He misses both driveways but manages to slide sideways into the curb blowing out one of the huge 50's series tires he had on a set of old Rocket rims that stuck 6" out of the quarters. It slowed him down enough that he slid past the gas pump and not into them. So he's bent and beaten, sneaks the hoodless, flat tire Mustang around the back hoping no one will see the mess. Before he can get his head together one of the guys working in the shop runs up to the car screaming. He gave John an ear full of 4 letter words. So that's John's Nelter story. I would say that is one of the better ones. Him burning his eyebrows off may be a little better one.JRiggs wrote:well is this a story or a secret...

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
While we are on the subject lets get the eyebrow story out of the way. Same car same engine. Only thing different is he put a tunnel ram on that 4V head Cleveland. The carbs where big and the engine wasn't tuned good for the set up. If you didn't watch it you would flood it. Once it was flooded it would take hours before you could get it to start. One day he flooded it out. He jumps out takes the screen out of the velocity stack pulls out some matches, lights one up and dropped it in one of the carbs. It made this funny sound, almost like a space age roller coaster ride. Then a dull puff sound as the carbs blew the fire from the carbs. He gets in the car and it starts right up. I seen him do this a few times. I don't recall if it was Johnny or Ronnie that was there this time but he flooded the car out bad. It was full of gas. He whips out a match and tosses it in the carb. This time it made some crazy whooping noises and this crazy loud phoof explosion, sending a fireballs out of both carbs.
John turns around and the front of his mini afro is burnt off along with his eyebrows. He trimmed his hair up so it wasn't too bad but it sure was funny to look at him for a few weeks while he didn't have eyebrows.
