Barn find Empty Barn find

Post by fredtheprophet March 20th 2009, 3:04 am

I heard about a barn car over the weekend and had to go check it out. An old dude got tired of driving his '50 Desoto about 20 years ago and stuck it in an outbuilding. We made a deal and I just got it towed home.

1950 Desoto Custom, 99k miles, flathead 6, fluid drive

It's more complete than the '48 Chevy I've got so I'm gonna sell off the chev and see if I can't get the desoto to go and stop.

Yep, the engine is locked. We pulled the radiator and I'm gonna bum a huge socket to try and turn the motor. The old farmer said he used to pull the spark plugs, oil the cylinders and turn the motor over once a year. When it wouldn't turn over last year he pulled it out to send to scrap and never go around to shipping it off.

Believe it or not, it used to be white. Rockers are about gone and the floors have some soft spots but I've mended worse.

The cylinders are full of fine oil right now, I'll find a socket somewhere Sunday and see what happens.

becafeful with that socket, I have seen guys twist the bolt right off in the crank and really be screwed.. Try putting a balancer puller on the bottome pully/balancer and then use a breaker bar between the puller jaws and rock it back and forth, once it moves a little bit oil the cylinders again with marvel mystry oil/pb blaster, let sit for a day them rock it again, take your time with it.. Also be sure to pull the plugs before you start breaking it loose, so you don't hydro lock the pistons in the cylinder and crack a ring.. You want to have somewhere for the oil to go (out of the plug hole) so you don't cause more4 harm than good.. Good luck hope it breaks free.. I'm trying to break an engine free myself so I feel your pain, it takes time but I have had success in the past doing it and that car still runs today, so it can be done...

Is the engine in the car? Take out the plugs shoot some wd40 down in the holes toss it in 3rd gear and hook up the bobcat to it. Let someone drag you around while you pop the clutch a few times.

oook. the engine is still stuck. After 2 hours spent getting the wrong socket then swapping it for the right one I was back on it.

The engine is still in the car, plugs are out, it's well lubed, starter is off. I can't just drag it because of the "fluid drive"... it's a 3 speed with no first gear, just a high and low range with automatic underdrive and a sort of torque converter where the clutch should be. From what I've read it has to be moving at 20+ mph before the transmission will turn the motor.

All I ended up doing with my new 1-3/4" socket was taking the crank bolt (and 6 others) loose and pulling the balancer. I'll bolt it back together and wedge a bar in my puller to see if I can budge it. If that doesn't work I'll try it at the flywheel.

If it's still stuck this time next week I'll go to CNC class early and cut a part that I can bolt to the front of the crank and put my 3/4" drive ratchet right in so I can leave weight on it.

Engine turns! I used a length of pipe to put pressure on the flywheel where I pulled the starter.

This week I'm going to track down a starter solenoid, wiring diagram, and hope I don't need brake parts.
