Marty It was poring hard! I cant remember how many inches a hour it was.
My Dad was parked on a small hill that saved his car from going under completely.
Still lost the distributor. had to get a new chip for the Mallory Unilite. change oil and all the good stuff but he was lucky other people had it worse.

Dang...he IS fortunate for sure. That was a bunch of rods severely damaged though as you have to think of the interiors as well as the engines/trannys.

The article said there was several local shops staying open all hours of the day to change fluids and dry them out the best they could.

That's classy...and how it should be in the hobby. Help a fellow out. I can only imagine how busy the local towing companies were!

Re: Photo of the day
Johnny was the Mayor of Newport back when the mob run the place. The whole city was either tide in to the organized crime that was already there or in the Cleveland Syndicate that was trying to muscle in on the action. Most people don't know the history of the town but it was more corrupt than any town in America and rumors have it that Las Vegas was modeled off Newport, Kentucky. Newport was in the action first. It was funny I thought when Bugsy got shot the FEDs were looking for his girlfriend Virginia Hill. You know where they found her? In Newport Ky with a couple other Jewish Gangsters hanging out in a hotel. People think that these guys are dead and gone now. I'm here to tell you that while the organized crime that took place in the early days are not there now there are still a few people around. Johnny is one of them. He's very old but he's still kicking. Johnny did some time back in the day to pay the price for his actions. Now depending on who you ask Johnny should not have done any time. I'm one of those. I thought the picture was funny in a way because Johnny son and I are very close friends. Frankie Peluso is a Newport City Commissioner now. We had lunch the other day and was talking about some of the old timers running for a commissioners seat now. We were trying to figure out who they were. Men in the 70 and 80's running. I told Frankie that most of the ol' timers that were tide in are dead and gone and no one cares anymore. No one remembers. A day or so later I get this pictures sent to me. It was at a cruise in here local. A gangster dummy in the back seat with a gun sticking out of his jacket with a Johnny TV Peluso sign. I guess some people still do remember.

Re: Photo of the day
Thanks for the backstory, Steve. I did not know all of that...just that Newport has quite the reputation among gangster types from back in the day.
We didn't have that back home in Alaska...just some very nefarious folks that ran the Hells Angels chapter in Anchorage back in the '60s and '70s. My dad ran with a few important folks from that group (although he was not a member of HA). Good peeps and they treated me like a rock star when I was a very young boy. But you did not cross 'em. Well, that's enough of that.

Lee

Re: Photo of the day
Sometimes the story "behind the story" is more intriguing than the story. Fortunately where I am, organized crime is something we read about in history books, or hear about somebody getin tangled up with when they go to the big city. What corruption we have here amounts to some people thinking they are smarter than us "farmer types." We might not have left the farm, but ya gotta get up early in the morning to think you're gonna get one over on us. Those who think they know it all, really irritate those of us who know better.

Re: Photo of the day
We have even worse corruption now. It's called government.
Someone needs to put the documentary, Before Vegas, there was Newport on line so more people can be educated.

Re: Photo of the day
Very true and well said, Steve. Some groups get a bad name/reputation but not all associated with said groups are bad people. Hence how my experiences were with the Hells Angels and some other nefarious people my dad ran around with. And when it comes to kids almost all of the gruffest of folks went out of their way to make a kid feel welcome. I have the same attitude about dancers...I grew up around 'em and some are really doing what they can do best to get thru school, feed their kid(s) or just make it all come together at the end of the month. Not all dancers are coke whores...not all bikers are skull knockers...not all gangsters are thugs. Sadly though I think that this kind of kindness is slowly leaving not just these groups but folks in general. It's a mad world anymore. A strange, odd, scary and unnerving world more often than not. It takes good God-fearing folks to keep kindness, charity and samaritanship alive and well. It's one reason why I like being in this club...good peeps all around who genuinely care for one another.
Sincerely,
Lee
