41 Dodge 3W Coupe
I got a chance to undo some of the bastardizing the previous owner did today.
This is the rear before with about 12" of the deck lid cut off and some shitty panels fabbed.
This is the rear now with a replacement deck lid and the crooked ass panels cut off.
The next thing to go is going to be the trailer tail lights the dipshit welded in. Then I'll concentrate on the rockers and door to fender panels.

Yup. I'd locate them in the same spot Willys taillights are. The others are Caddy, I'd put those higher up in the fender.

Well I got the front sheet metal removed today and the frame doesn't look real receptive to a straight axle. It kicks up further forward than most. I know I need to stub the frame, but I'm afraid it kicks up too far forward to have the spring mounts level. I'm not sure if the Econoline springs will work. I need to find out what the length is on them, if the guy with the front end ever gets off his ass and strips the rest of the van.

In doing a little research I found this on the HAMB. It looks like my worries of the spring mounts being level front to rear are unfounded. I guess if the rear is lower, you'll just get more caster and the wheel will straighten out faster and easier

Went to Weiler Welding today and bought parts for my TIG torch and gas for my MIG. Got all the trim holes on the left side welded and ground, windshield and dash removed and started DA'ing the body. Tomorrow I'll get the right side trim holes taken care of.
I talked to the guy with the Econoline and he had the tranny out and was working on the motor. Hopefully he'll have it ready for me to pick up next weekend.
I'm toying with the idea of making the steel front end a tilt. I want to make the hood a one piece anyway so why not the whole front end?

Finished the metal work on the dash that I started when Glen was here, I still need to do some finish work and drill holes for the gauges.
Today I spent the afternoon knitting a door. I had to replace almost the entire bottom inner structure on the passenger door including the corners.
I think the driver's door is about the same, I'll try to tackle it this week.
I should have $1200 worth of inner and outer rockers by next weekend. They better be nice for that price. After that I'm going to redo the motor mounts and a few other cobbed up pieces of shit the previous owner made.

Man, that's some nice work. How did you form the corner pieces for the door? How many pieces of metal are in each corner patch?

Thanks.
I used a body hammer, a couple different size pieces of tubing and a vice as dollies, a box brake and a MIG welder. The front corner is one piece, the rear is four pieces.

Got the motor pulled and found more craptacular workmanship.
And this is not camera angle, note the alignment.
Next step is to stub the frame and get the straight axle installed.

Stock F1 springs were too long so I ordered new springs tonight. Hopefully they will get here Monday. I'll probably wait until they show up to start cutting on the frame.

Got started on the front end today.
Holy shit!
Tacked frame rails
Squared and mounts tacked
Once I'm sure everything is right I'll plate and weld the frame and final weld the mounts. I'll add a front crossmember once I locate the radiator and make sure the front body work fits ok.
It'll have to wait though cause tomorrow I'm going to get the Fury and jerk the motor and tranny so I can scrap the rest Monday morning while the price is still high.

The 400 is going in the Camaro once it gets a little massaging. I guess double hump heads w/ flat tops will give you 11.5:1 compression with the bore and stroke of the 400. A 292 Comp Cam, my LT1 intake and a 750 Holley and it should pull like a motherfucker out of the corners.
I'll use the trans as a spare for the Buick. I may have a friend of mine do a race rebuild on it.

Got the Fury stripped Sunday and scrapped it Monday morning.
I installed the front disc kit on the straight axle dry due to the wrong grease seals. I think .125" interference is a bit much. They might last to the end of the driveway. The car is rolling now and I want to test fit the front bodywork. I'll try to do it tomorrow after I get home. I need to dig it out of my extra tool truck and didn't want to try it in the dark. I REALLY want to see what it looks like with the body intact.
And yes I'll take lots of pictures.

Needless to say this is the highlight of my week so far.
One of my customers gave me enough 1/8" sheet today to plate the frame and make mounting brackets for the rad and front end, I'll see the guy I got the 3x4 from tomorrow and get some 1x1 for the rad support.

love the front. you going to drop the rear a little??? I'd drop it in the back enough to get the wheel rounded in the wheel well. i know you are not done yet. I was wondering what the look on your face would be like with the hood on and you sitting in the driver seat the first time you get in it with it gassered up in the front. don't run over any small kids that stop in front of you at a cross walk. cause you won't be able to see em .lol

I'm going for level front to rear. The front will come down some with weight on it. The rear wells will get radiused. I want to run about a 29x12x15 rear tire.

Well I had a productive Sunday. I got the frame plated and the motor mounts fabbed. Went out tonight and got the mounts welded in and set the motor in. I think the ride height will be fine once I take the lowering blocks out of the rear.
The next step is shock mounts and a front cross member for the radiator and rear trans cross member, then tear the motor and tranny down and see what I need there.

Thanks, Jim.
Tonight I got the front cross member welded in and the ends of the rails boxed shut. I figured out where the radiator needs to go and will start on the support structure for that and the front nose next.

Started tearing the motor down tonight. If it's a 56k mile motor, it was down a fucking rough road. The timing chain has 7/8" of lateral movement and you need a ladder to step over the ridge in the cylinders. Hopefully the crank will be alright. I have a customer that has a machine shop at his house that I think I can trade tools for machine work, so I'll just have to buy parts.
I hope the tranny looks better or at least doesn't need any hard parts.

I had a pretty productive weekend. I got the rockers 90% finished. I still need to fab a couple small pieces. I'll start on the floor next.
At this point it's looking like I'll run out of money before I run out of time. I'm still going to try to make it to Hot Rod Cinematic.

Chevy? If so and you get a different set of rear rims I'll buy the ones off of it, if you want to sell em. I didn't know if you was gonna run a set of slots on it or keep the ones ya have. the ones on there now would look good on my 36.... 8"?

that stinks on the bolt pattern. I got rid of a set of 10" slots about a year ago. use to see them all the time. getting hard to come by now a days. the guy that has my Flattie and those hemi's use to have a set of 15x4 slot front runners. those would look cool on the front but I don't know if he still has them or even if he would let go of them. I ask him to sell em to me about 10 years ago and he told me to take em and use them and when he's ready for 'em he'd ask for them back. lol I left them in the garage. I thought they were cool. I'd never seen a set of slot skinnies before. I think the steelies on the front will give it a vintage look also. I can't wait to see that thing coming down the street. if you end up needing a hand doing something just yell. sometime you may need someone just to hold something in place while you give it a tack or whatever. I can run up there.

Well I fucked around all weekend trying to figure out the steering. The Vega box was going to take at least 2 u-joints and a long intermediate shaft. The Corvair box was going to require a modified pitman arm. I don't like to weld shit like that. So today while I was at DoWops we were talking about the A coupe body he just got and I asked him about the steering set up he was going to use. He showed me an F1 box but said he didn't think he wanted to use it since he was leaning toward cross steering. The more I looked at the box, the more I thought I could use it. He let me bring it home and after about an hour of measuring and mocking up I called him and traded the Corvair box for it. I got the hole cut in the frame tonight and got it fitted. I just need to get some tubing to extend my drag link, a column and a couple joints and it's done. I'll post pics later.

I finally got around to taking some pics.
Draglink
Steering box w/frame re-enforcement
The front end looks pretty far away
The left front rocker metalwork finished
Tim posting 75 days to HRC made me realize there is no fucking way I'm going to make it. I still have to build a motor, buy glass, wheels and tires, seats, wiring harness, shifter and God knows what else and I got 95 bucks to my name.
So basically, no matter how you look at it, I'm fucked.

I spent the afternoon fabbing floor braces and got them welded in. I got the center section of the drive shaft tunnel in and have a pretty good idea of how I'm going to do the front section of the tunnel. Hopefully the weather will hold out this week and I can get the floor done.

Made some progress on the floor and seat mounts tonight. I'm going to use my Camaro seats since I have them and they're free.
I'm not sure on seat position yet so I haven't fastened anything down yet.
I'll probably start on the rear of the floor next.

Thanks Tim, I kinda like the way they look too.
Steve, I thought about making a set of bomber seats and might still do it. The problem is having covers made would run about $300. I know because Jason Green had a set made for some lowback polys he was going to put in his 55.

I still have a lot of welding and grinding to do, then it's seam sealer and Dynamat. I haven't decided whether to undercoat or just paint the underside yet.
I'm going to get may accelerator and brake pedals next so I can get them located.

Yeah, I believe I'd leave that work of art to be seen. Especially, since it's a GASSER and supposed to be lightweight, right? I wonder how hot that interior would get in the summer...

don't want to steal the thread but it got me to thinking about my T/A..with a hot (PUN) small block headers and 3" pipes run to the rearend and then dumped. I have carpet in it and thats it. I took all the jute and insulation out from under the carpet as well as behind the dash on the firewall. cruising around somerset Ky at the somernites cruise IT WAS HOT. even after dark just through town rolling through the 4 speed I was in a sweat. the car has been lighted up and even with the fenderwells gone and a 5" cowl hood, it was still HOT.looks like with all the places for the heat to escape it wouldn't be that bad.when I start on the T/A again it will have Dynamat in it. if I loose a race by a bumper I will just lay off the big macs after that

So, Bill scored this awesome set of hesher mags and slicks for a mere $25. We spent a couple hours fuckin with it til they fit. As you can see, it still needs the quarters a little more 'clearanced' with the cut-off wheel. I think he needs to figure out where he's gonna hang wheelie bars...

I spent the weekend building a pedal assembly. The transverse setups are $275.00, I have about $60 in this one. I ended up with a 5.5:1 pedal ratio so the length of the pedal should be o.k. I need to either put in a trap door for m/c access or make the whole dash hinge from the bottom. I won't know which until I get a little further along.

That's about a 40-41 Plymouth. Good looking car. Mine will be a bit higher, wider and rougher. Sort of a budget 60's build.

If I worried about that I'd drive a "new" car and have the dealer do all the repairs.

Taking off July 4-8 and plan on getting this thing in primer with most of the bodywork done. I met one of the previous owners today. He said the bodywork was done when he got it but he put in the drivetrain. He really wants the 15x8 steelies back but I want to keep them for a possible Mustang project in the future.

Steve and I went to Xenia today and found the truck Jeff was talking about. At first I wasn't sure about them. We unbolted them and went to the cashier. I figured they'd say $50 and if it was any higher I was thinking of walking. I told the guy I had 2 bucket seats, no power. "That will be $31.95". SCORE!
We came back and I cleaned them up and set them in place. They are perfect for the car.
I'll dye them black once I get the bodywork done.
JEFF, I OWE YOU DINNER NEXT TIME WE ALL GET TOGETHER. Hopefully it won't be too long from now or Doug could starve.

he thought about it but I'm not sure if he will or not. they have some bad spots where some tar was on them. you really can't see the color in the pics. hard to say but it looks like a goldish light green with pearl in it. I think they are more gold than green though. I'm sure either way he goes, leave em or die em they will be slick. the seats are perfect for the gasser.

That looks nice, Bill. Those 'underdash masters' are ridiculously expensive to buy. Then again, if it fails, someone else gets sued...

Seeing as how I'd like to drive this before I get too old to climb into it, I've decided to go back to SBC power and cannibalize my Buick. I started to work on the mounts tonight but I couldn't find the ones that came off of the 400 sbc. John Russell gave me a set today, but I forgot to take them with me. I did find an old Weiand solid cast tunnel ram with 450's today for $400. It's not actively for sale but I can buy it if I want it. That with the Offy valve covers would look pretty cool. But for now the focus is to get it to move under it's own power. The 355/TH350 combo with the 2500 stall converter should do a fair job of that. The motor was headed for the Camaro, but I can get the Dodge running a lot cheaper. I have a line on a 427 with a spun main that isn't going anywhere soon so maybe next Spring I can try to acquire that for the Camaro. I also found a 4:56 posi 8 3/4 pig but don't know a price yet.
The first task will be getting the motor installed. Then I'll work on wiring and lights. I may end up with a Lexan windshield for the time being. The only major purchase will be the Hurst cheaters.
The goal now is to make it to the Pumpkin Run.
Without a tow bar.

How much set back is there if any for the motor? Are you going to put wheelie bars on it? With a steep gear and some good tires you might be able to put a little daylight under that front end.

About 4". I hope to get that 4:56 posi center section and see if I need wheelie bars.

I got the firewall smoothed and primed and got the motor and trans set in. I didn't realize the trans I took out was a long tail shaft and the one I put in is a short, so now I need a drive shaft 1 3/4" longer. The radiator is just sitting there to contain fluids, I need to set the nose on and see if I'll be able to use it. The F/G body headers fit, no problem so that's one less thing I need to buy. I ordered gauges and 50 Pontiac tail lights from Moon Saturday so hopefully I'll have them by next weekend.
Wiring harness, slicks and a windshield are the last of the major pieces I need to buy. I may just use a Mr. Gasket glass fuse panel and wire it myself, run the slicks that are on it and cut a Lexan windshield.

Thanks Jim. I doubt it'll be ready by then. I'm hoping for the Pumpkin Run.
I worked on getting the steering finished. I didn't like the column drop I started, it didn't offer enough support. So I made this one. I think you could pick the car up by it.
I need to find a drive shaft from an Impala or other full size GM with a TH350 Trans that I can have shortened.

I scored this absolutely bitchen tunnel ram today from my buddy Jason along with a set of 29.5/9/15 M/T wrinkle walls.
The tires are too small for the Dodge but should fit the Buick or Camaro. I'm glad I found this out before I ordered the Hurst 30/10/15's. I think they'll be too small also. I think I need at least a 31/12/15 tire which is going to limit my choices.
On a down note I discovered the aluminum slots I bought don't fit either. The lugs are too big in diameter.

Maybe a little taller, but I wouldn't go any wider. They just don't look right on an early-style gasser such as this. Maybe go to a 30x10x15. Especially from that rear shot. It just looks right!
One thing that might help - Ever consider lowering the rear a little? Some 2" blocks would bring the fenders down closer to the tires and give it that squatted ready-to-launch look that a lot of these cars had. We did this to a '47 Ford PU gasser we built and it made a huge difference in the looks. I will try to get a pic up on here so you can see what I mean. There is a video we have of it on YouTube Here's a link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7wvfplP9Pg
The rear tires on it are Hurst cheaters - 30x7.5x15 on 15x5 wheels.

Wiring harness, slicks and a windshield are the last of the major pieces I need to buy. I may just use a Mr. Gasket glass fuse panel and wire it myself, run the slicks that are on it and cut a Lexan windshield.

You sure do good work Bill. It'll soon be running down the road. If we have the next picnic on September 16th you think it'll be road ready?

Do these tires make my ass look big?
These are 29.5X9X15's, I'm thinking I need 30X12X15's to fill it out a little more.
Opinions?

I took out some lowering blocks because I was worried about the added leverage on the springs causing wheel hop. I'll put them back in tomorrow and look at it. If I like it maybe I'll de-arch the springs.

Bill I personally think it would look better with 30" x 10" and drop the rear a tad. The gassers always looked better to me lower in the back than level.

Yes much better. Looking really good! Be careful on your tire width though, when they start sticking out of the fenderwells they look a little goofy to me. Plus the skinnier tires were the norm back then anyways...

I made a radiator support for the Regal radiator and it ended up too tall for the front end to fit correctly. I dropped back and punted and used the Camaro radiator. I'll probably end up buying a 3 row to replace it, but at least I can run the car when I'm ready. I decided to install the tunnel ram today so I could check for hood clearance. That and I think Cheri wanted it out of the living room.
Here's some pics for everyone except Steve.

I take it your going to run a mail box scoop or something of that nature because it looks like the hood will be awfully close to the carb stacks. If you don't run a scoop will you be able to get air in there?

Well the front end tilts, but I have a shitload of metal work to do. The main cross brace still needs lightened and rounded.
Making the hood one piece is going to be a real day at the beach.
But I think it looks pretty cool. It definitely looks gasser.
I still need to fab some stops unless I want to haul around the R134 tank.

Re: 41 Dodge 3W Coupe
It's been too (BEEP) cold to work lately. I did get my carbs rebuilt last weekend. I'm going to Louisville to look for stuff I need to finish it and any Camaro parts I may find. I bought an 8? ElCamino today with a blown motor for $200.00 to get the Corvette rallys for the Camaro and short shaft TH350 for John Russell. It has a factory steel cowl hood I'll pull of and sell and Jason said a buddy of his wants the spindles. The rest will get scrapped and I should get about $250.00 back.

Re: 41 Dodge 3W Coupe
Elky sounds like a killer parts car. it's funny how hard a short tail 350 trans is to find now a days. they use to be all over the place. I'd like to get a couple to put in stock.

I really like your work on the dodge the tilt front looks awesome i would like to look at it in person I'm thinking about putting one on my 42 ford coupe i saw one on a 56 ford truck all steel that had convertible top cylinders and elect motor that lifted it i want to see how you made your hinges and latches to see if i can make them power also.Mine shouldn't be that hard the only thing thats steel is the hood grill and headlight buckets. any help will be appreciated

Re: 41 Dodge 3W Coupe
That old Dodge was really cool and the workmanship was top notch. There isn't anybody that likes the old Gasser type cars more than me, I go to them like a moth to a flame, but I can only imagine how nice that Camaro will be.

Bill I'm not 100% sure but it looks like your Dodge in the new Rebel Rodz magazine page 15.
