Farmall SMTA
Picked up a Farmall Super MTA this past saturday at an auction. Wide front end. live hydraulics. Probably going to take a 900 pond gorilla to turn it. Only built for 1 year, 1954. Suppose to be built in louisville,ky. Going to unload it and start it tomorrow and check it out. Getting pictures tomorrow.

Re: Farmall SMTA
Have you ever fooled with that torque amplifier? My son in law had one with it and never could get it quite right. 'Course it was slap worn out so that didn't help.

Re: Farmall SMTA
Sheetmetal is pretty straight. Everything works good.
What was the tractor? Was it a newer 86 or 66 series tractor? The torques always gave problems in the bigger tractors if you useed them in low range. Never had one out but have a buddy that has had several.

It was a 300. '55 or '56 model. Like I say, rode hard and put up wet.

I'm not sure if the small tractors with the ta were set up just like the larger ones. I think the larger tractors with ta cost around $1500 just to fix the ta. You still have to pull the trans out.

He came out better than that. Someone offered him more than he paid for it. It has a new home.

Took a picture of my smta and two other farmalls. One on the far end is dad's. The MTA had an electrical short. Changed it over to an alternator and rewired some of it.

Re: Farmall SMTA
The M, and most early T/A's were a mechanically shifted reduction. The "newer" bigger tractors, like the 66 series and such used a hydraulically shifted T/A. A lot of problems arose when they were shifted into low range from travelling in road gear, or other applications where the tractor "drove" the trans, and the one way would give up in them. If they were shifted under load, with the trans driving the tractor, they were near bulletproof- like a lot of other stuff... if used properly, lasted and worked well.... if mistreated, failed spectacularly.

Re: Farmall SMTA
Sold the SMTA to a friend that I went to college with. When you see those old IH tractors such as the 66 series and 86 series they either say ta is bad or is brand new.
