Re: 4:56 gear on the street
I can't find a 3:55 gear for an 8.5? I found one for an 8.2. What would you think for an 8.5?

As far as takeoff goes, all I did was multiply the rear gear times the first gear of the trans. So, for the 'glide that is 4.56 x 1.76 = 8.02. To compare it to a turbo 400, take the 8.02 and divide it by its first gear which is 2.48 which comes to 3.23.
I have played around with the online calculators quite a bit over the years. I don't take the info as "the gospel" but they generally get you in the ballpark for what you re doing. In the case of the gear ratio/RPM calc, I must say that I have my doubts. My Granada had a 4.11 gear and a 29" tall tire and it was 3000 rpm at 55 mph. That is an absolute fact. When I plug those numbers in the calc, it tells me 63 mph. With you having a 26" tire and with a 4.56, that makes it that much tougher for me to buy into what it is saying. If anyone knows a gear/tire setup that they have or had and what RPM it turned on the highway, please chime in. This is throwing me off a bit.

Re: 4:56 gear on the street
456 is a ton of gear!I think way to much for the street especially where you live,by the time you go through a intersection your in 3rd gear already.AS for the 400 turbo it won,t stay in low gear unless you put a trans pack in it,it will shift out by itself. They are strong!the 350 turbo just shift kit it and your done Joe switched his from a 400 to a 350 he said the 350 had a crisper 3rd gear. thats who you need to talk to about that stuff Joey!
