Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
Its been 50 years since I was there,I was 9 years old.See if you can get some pictures.I am looking for 1 of the Impaladin license plaques.ThanksRebStew wrote:Impaladin Car Club? That's cool. I had a club member take me to the old club house behind Columbia St. The guy that owns the house now was standing in the back yard. I ask him about the old garage and the Impaladin's. He told me the Impaladin graffiti was still on the wall where they wrote the club name and some other stuff. After all these years no one painted over it. I was wanting some pics but he seemed to busy to mess with me. I was going to try again later but never got the chance.

By the way the walls was some sort of factory, not sure what kind.I was the manager of the Tresler Comet during the Blizzard of 78.There was guy named Bob Simon who lived on a house boat across from the station who would bring me hot cocoa,he always had a stories to tell about Newports gambling day.He was a retired mechanic from Boron station at 11th street and Isabelle.I remember the old station before they tore it down,I think it was a Standard. It seem the more I think about then the more I remember.WOW!foxlincoln wrote:Its been 50 years since I was there,I was 9 years old.See if you can get some pictures.I am looking for 1 of the Impaladin license plaques.ThanksRebStew wrote:Impaladin Car Club? Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
I'm really enjoying this. When I brought the girls up for the River Run we went to the Stewart house since we were early. For once. And I was giving them details about the places we'd pass. They wanted to know how I knew so much about places 100 plus miles from home. Simple I told them, I ask.

The garage at 720 Columbia is where the Impaladins worked on cars.It was a neat place to be when I was 9 years old.foxlincoln wrote:By the way the walls was some sort of factory, not sure what kind.I was the manager of the Tresler Comet during the Blizzard of 78.There was guy named Bob Simon who lived on a house boat across from the station who would bring me hot cocoa,he always had a stories to tell about Newports gambling day.He was a retired mechanic from Boron station at 11th street and Isabelle.I remember the old station before they tore it down,I think it was a Standard.
On York ST at E.Southgate across from the Old Courthouse there is an old garage where I saw my first dragster.I remember the engine it was injected. It had 8 orange rubber balls all connected by leather shoe string stuffed in each injector stack.I was amazed by the big Rubber slicks. There was a lot of neat things going on powered by gambling money.Even as a kid I noticed how things died when the gambling went away.Good paying jobs were everywhere.

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
I went to breakfast with some of the older hot rodders a while back, Paul Kunkle, Jim Wethington and a bunch more. I'm 41 and was at least 20 years younger than the youngest guy at the table. We was talking about the Clutch Jumpers and the Impaladin's car clubs that where here years ago. One guy had an older dragger plate from the Impaladins if I'm not mistaken.foxlincoln wrote:Its been 50 years since I was there,I was 9 years old.See if you can get some pictures.I am looking for 1 of the Impaladin license plaques.ThanksRebStew wrote:Impaladin Car Club? The old gas station on 11th and Isabella was cool. A friend of mine, Donnie Donatelli worked there before it closed down and I would stop in and hang out.

Re: Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics
I would be very interested in one of the plates. The club had a rule that if you quit the you had to turn in the plate. Both of my brothers quit the club.If they saw a plate on a car that was not a member they would take the plate.I made a mistake about the location of the station,11th and Isabella was a Tresler Comet with I think it was a Star station across from it.The one I was referring to was on the at 12th and Brighton. My dad bought gas from the Tresler,I got many Reds Louisville Slugger ball bats from there. The Star is where you bought cheap bulk oil for your pos that leaked.Sold it in glass jars liked they used before canned oil.

is this wat the plate looked like?
,,,,,I found this website that bought the patents of all the clubs from the fifties and sixties, i dont know how much they are but just go to,,,,, http://www.obrientruckers.com/about.html
In the 80/90's O’Brien Truckers acquired all of the original patterns from two car club plaque manufacturers of the 1950's and 60's - 4,100 from Speed Gems of Minneapolis, Minnesota and 8,000 from Chicago Metal Craft of Port Chicago, California. When added to the patterns we've made since 1978, this gave us the bragging rights of having the world's largest collection of over 15,000 car club plaques and patterns!
