New to me
The wife and I got a new motorcycle a few months ago. We have racked up quite a few miles in a short time. Nothing spectacular but we love it. It is a 1984 Sporty Ironhead 1000. I don't have any pics of the new tank. I swapped the tank so we didn't have to stop for gas quite so often. I am getting close to 40mpg on the bike. We are looking for a better seat. Not a fan of the studs and trying to find one with a wider passenger pad. They are out there, but trying to find one we can afford.

Cool! Yea, those Sporter tanks aren't much for long rides in the country.

Re: New to me
So here is how the Harley was when we got it...
Had a porkster tank that I tossed on it so we could get some longer rides between gas stations but my wife and I weren't happy with how it looked. This was taken the day I got the bike out this year.
We had been acquiring some parts over the winter. Got a heck of a deal on the cissy bar and pad. Drove to Indy for a new seat which is worth it's weight in gold! I also got a fat bob tank with full dash for a sweet deal on evil bay.
Here is the new tank in primer to see what needed fixed before paint...
Can't see it very good in this pic but the top of tank had some areas that needed filled in and the seam hidden.
Did my first hand at body filler on my own. For the first time I am very pleased with the results.
Just did rattle can primer and paint. I did do a lot of sanding and prepping each stage. I am happy with the results. I have to redo the front fender because as I moved it to my shed to dry a big house fly landed in the wet paint. For now I'm going to run it without since I can't get much ridding in with all the rain.

Re: New to me
I have a friend who is making a template in vinyl so I can put it on the tank and air brush the logo on the tank. I'm going to use the Blue paint I got from Marty. Going to have it pinstriped in white and the blue paint.

Re: New to me
Oh the fly is gone. I pulled him out with tweezers right away. I don't think this will buff out. I will try and take a pic of it and load it.

Re: New to me
The fly ended up on its back and was flapping its wings. You can almost picture it with the divots it left. It's a little hard to tell but if you look real close to the lines it's cracked pretty bad.

Re: New to me
Thanks for the kind words. I tired to take my time between each step. Did a lot of reading and watching videos on line. Applying those things to what I've been able to watch when hangin out with club members working on their projects. This was a great learning project. Can't wait till I can add full automotive primer/paint. I'm so ready to have a garage with power and lights. If I had that the '55 would be coming all apart this winter.
If anyone knows of a garage I could rent with power, I would switch just so I could do work over the winter. If any one knows of anything in the Newport area let me know. I know myself well enough to know that if it is too far away, I'll never get out there.

Re: New to me
With the insurance money I was able to pic up a 1991 Electra Glide.
Sold a few items that were left over from the previous harley and the rest of the insurance money and had the money finally to get her painted. I hadn't really done anything to the bike except ride it around town since we got it. Painting the body parts was the step I was waiting for because it made it easier to do the other updates while all the body pieces are off the bike.
So here are a few pics from when I first got the bike last fall...
Pic from the ad
First pictures shortly after getting her home and finding a seat and back rest for me and my old lady.

Re: New to me
So everything is off to paint.
Decided to freshen up the look of the motor. I've always like the night train look and the chrome rocker boxes were too far gone to buff out.
Used pinstripe tape to tape off the edges of the fins on the jugs.
So, on to paint...
It's not perfect, won't win any shows... but I'm happy with how it turned out. She's meant to be ridden and beat on... not for shows any way...

Re: New to me
On to the front end. I eventually want to get the 21" king spoke front wheel with the black spokes. Will probably have to wait till next year. Since I'm wanting to go this direction and so little of the rear wheel shows, I decided to paint my wheels. That will allow me to only need the front wheel, as the rear will blend in and disappear.
In the process, I cleaned up the front end...

Re: New to me
Nice 'Glide! Looks like you are giving her a good home. I had a '68 XLX and I've wanted to find a beat up old Virago or Shadow to plunk around on and resurrect. What I'd call a 'tinker' bike. Keep up the good work!

No graphics or badges. There might be some pinstriping come along. Going to live with it for a bit just as she is.
