Adding a Teenager to Insurance
Was going to add my 17-year-old to my car insurance since he finally has a full unrestricted license. When I took my current policy, they told me it would be an additional $400-600 a year to add my son. Checked on line today and they want an additional $1800/year. I'll call them tomorrow and see if they want to do it for a reasonable amount. If not, I guess I'll be changing insurance companies. I got another quote on line to add him for $600/year over what I currently pay. That's closer to what I expected and I can live with that.

Re: Adding a Teenager to Insurance
I was shocked when I asked about Corey. He does get a discount for good grades which I thought was strange but hey, when the time comes I'll take all the discounts I can get. I told Corey I'd help him out on the first insurance bill but he was going to have to pay his own way after that.
He will be 17 in a few weeks. Man I feel old. He's not the oldest of my kids either. They are growing up fast.

We'll cover the cost of KP's insurance. He is expected to make the Honor Role and he does, and as long as he does that and stays out of trouble, it's golden. I'd rather he focus on academics and maybe get a scholarship or some kind of assistance to ease that burden when it gets here. That's going to be a budget buster. He's gonna have to get at least a Master's degree in something so he can make a decent living. He's a pretty darn smart kid, he just doesn't have any kind of knack for making or fixing things.
I do understand the need to make them comprehend the cost and responsibility that goes with driving. I make sure he knows what things cost, and he drives with clear skies overhead and the knowledge that it will get very ugly if he screws up.
Corey isn't your oldest?

Well, I know what's happening is that the Z06 & Z28/SS are making things more expensive. I'm not sure I'll ever be comfortable turning him loose by himself in either of those cars.

Re: Adding a Teenager to Insurance
The deed is done. It's going to cost $800/YR to add my son to the insurance policy. Had to change insurers. Also combined my H/O policy and umbrella, added more coverage, and reduced that cost by $600/YR, so the additional cost is actually only going to be +/- $200/YR.
My current auto insurer is charging me a $50 cancellation fee and I ain't too happy about that, but that's the way it goes.
