Have any of you guys ever painted a "foam" grant steering wheel? I have a vintage steering wheel that I am considering putting in the truck but instead of the black trim, I was thinking about doing a metal flake finish on it. I am thinking I would have to use a flexing agent but not sure if there is something else out there that is more for this type of application. Take into consideration, when I say "foam" it isn't a real soft foam. It is quite old and is actually pretty hard to the touch but you can still see a bit of give to it. I think it's the 838 series steering wheel with the chrome tri-bar with 3 holes in each bar.

I have a wheel like that still in the box and in my closet. It's not as soft as the ones they have now but it still will flex. I guess a flex agent could be added but I'm not too sure if it would stay.

You may end up with a puddle of goo, if you use a lacquer base paint it will more than likely melt the foam, aswell as enamel with hardener or reducers.. Not sure if a urathane will effect it, you would probably be better to try and find a wheel that matches, or just run it as is.. unless your not worried about loosing the wheel.. I personally don't think it will hold up well either a steering wheel see's lots of abuse...
