A friend of mine that owned a junkyard had a Volare that had the RT option. Black with orange stripes. Not sure what ever happened to it. It may still be sitting next to his barn.

My first driving car was a 76 Aspen R/T. Great car till I got rear ended by a drunk in a Maverick and shoved under my friends 67 Chevelle

They've been around long enough now, you could almost call Hi-jackers "vintage."

Re: Our youth in hot rodding
I don't know about the other states but back about '73 or '74 they passed a law here to regulate bumper height. If I remember right you had a three inch tolerance from original. I got stopped quite a few times but never ticketed, just hassled. I guess they wanted car bumpers to line up in a crash, too many people ran underneath some jacked up thing from behind and BOOM!

In the mid to late 80's TN used that law. When we were down there for the Rod Run they were using it for an excuse to pull people over.

Re: Our youth in hot rodding
Those 60s looked nice but cars with them usually had banged up rear quarter panels after awhile.. Too much negative caster with hydroplaning ease might have been the issue.. I always liked the cars with extended shackles like the 57 in the back ground..

Re: Our youth in hot rodding
The big thing in NY is mufflers... always a source of problems. Had my share of aggravation from it over the years. (20+ years or more ago, now) But it amazes me, I can't run glass packs on a big block, but I can have a diesel pickup that will shake your windows and darken the sky, or a Harley that will deafen an entire old folks home, and never get a second look from law enforcement.

Re: Our youth in hot rodding
I had a Mustang years ago that I lifted the rear to get a huge set of 50's out of the sides of the 1/4's. I used air shocks. shock extensions, anyone remember those? and shackles. I got what I wanted but it was taxed so hard it didn't have any travel. It rode like you weld a piece of metal to the frame and spring. Hit a bump and it would bounce off the ground in the back like a basketball. It was really goofy now that I think about it but as a kid it was cool.Pitts64 wrote:.. Re: Our youth in hot rodding
And look at what Mustangs are going for today...
In 1975 had a 70 convert 302/3 speed stick with a blown second gear.. I beat the hell out of it..

Re: Our youth in hot rodding
Yea.. You could get them cheap. A friend of mine had a fastback 'stang that I drove around and beat on. We had a 351 C with a tunnel ram and 4 speed in it. Back then you could find the stuff cheap. It was a 68 1/2 GT Fastback. You can almost buy a cheap house for what those cars go for today.
