Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Needs a different grill and taillights and bumpers. the 55 chevy bumpers would look goood without the uprites on them and maybe a corvette grill with extra teeth and a set of packered tailights or maybe late model caddie lights for the rear. worse case is to buy a piece of sheet steel and cut the junk off the roof and skin the center of it. there is no dobt in my mind that you stewert cant fix this. i saw your metal working skills before! their is a 54 harttop down here on a lot that need as much work as this one and they want 5500.00 for it they also got a 58 hardtop with a 409 in it for 6500.00 thats what their asking but i think they went to the Marten Luther King school the I Have a Dream One!!! if anyone is interest in thouse cars they are at exit 25off of i 75 in corbin ky turn right and go about a half mile on the left

That one would be a good for a convertible conversion if a rough 53/54 convertible with all the special parts could be found.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
I thought about that. I just don't want to get into that kind of work. I'll have my hands full with the back 1/4's and new face lift. I spent two hours today trying to make the gas pedal they had cobbled in it work. No luck. I'm going to yank all their junk out and replace it.junkyardjeff wrote:That one would be a good for a convertible conversion if a rough 53/54 convertible with all the special parts could be found.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Dog I can fix it. What my thought is that I could fix their screw ups but it would take twice as long fixing it as it would if I just had a good top to chop. We will see. I may try to find a back glass from a 51 or 52 Chevy for the back and lay it down. That will get rid of most of their screw up.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Wondering what you guys think. I don't have the cash to buy quarters and taillights. If I did I'd either get 55 Chevy taillight sections and mount them on the top of the quarters, kind of like an early Vette's would be. Or a pair of fins from a Packard. Needless to say both cost more money than I have to blow right now.
So what do you guys think of the sloped quarters on the back of this ride? I have been looking at pictures for 2 days trying to find a cheap way to fix the back of this Dead Sled...
I kind of like this one. thoughts? Ideas??

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
if the bumper was tucked in a little more so that you didnt have the flat spot above it, it would look alot better ...

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Yea. One thing I wanted to see with that one was to watch them change the tire. It look's like they molded the wheel opening in. I looked hard but unless you just can't see the skirts in the pics you will have to jack it up and take a bolt or two out of the suspension to get the rear down to get the tire off. I'm hoping I just can't see the skirt opening.Arieldouglas wrote:Talk about a lot of bondo
Either way that car was the only one I could find with that type of quarter extension that I'm thinking of doing.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
I kinda like the look of the gold one but instead of the little lights what about a set of caddie long thin lights layed down on the outside of the quarters and please open up that deck lid the way its suppose to be looks like something out of the 30s with a rumble seat just dosent fit the year of the car to me . needs a set of fiberglass cruiser skirts also! and i like the bumper on the burgandy one clean look and the roof on it looks right also. Whats everyones ideas for the front end ?

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
I worked on that gas pedal linkage for hours. Nothing I did would work. I'm not sure what they where thinking but it was all cobbled together. I ripped it all out and used a Camaro gas pedal and a aftermarket cable. That fancy cable took some time to make it work. It's pretty and it works but man it took me a while to get it to where everything was just right. Hey I have a fully working gas pedal now!Reb Stew wrote:I get in the car and the gas pedal is froze. I messed with it in the car and under the hood but could only give it a small amount of gas. I'll have to look into that more.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Now on to the shifter
Someone broke most of the linkage off the side of the trans. It has a Powerglide in it and with the linkage the way it is it won't have enough reach to pull it back in gear. I did a little grinding on an extension for the linkage. Mated it and welded a small bead and then took the air hose to it to cool it. After it was touchable I'd weld some more. It took some time but I didn't want to over heat anything and the pan gasket was right there too.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
I don't pitch any bracket now matter what. I started digging through my scrap pile and found a rod with a T in it. One end of the T had this snazzy slide through bracket that you can slip a piece of round stock in and snug it tight with a 9/16 wrench. I cut that part off and mated it to the bottom of the shifter.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
Now for a shifter rod. I dug through my pile and came up empty. Now what?? I went out to the big garage and started digging through dads junk pile. I found a nice 4 foot piece of round stock.
I dug around and found this really thick washer. It looked old so I figured I'd try it. The metal washers you get today will melt trying to weld it on to some good metal. The washer was half the thickness of the round stuck so I just ground one half off the tip and set the washer in the half cut. The washer didn't melt out and took a nice hot weld all around it. I cleaned it up a bit and let it cool.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
I ran into another problem But after looking it's an easy fix. I let the air out of the shocks the other day and the car went down but then stopped short of resting fully on the springs. I pushed down and it was bottomed out. I thought the air shock that where on it was just too tall. Today I jacked up one side of the front and the other side rear was almost dragging the ground. It was no longer bottoming out. I was puzzled but over looked it. After I seen this I figured out it was not the shocks at all. Check out the driveshaft.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
With the air shocks down it stopped when it bottom out the driveshaft into the trans. I did not want to cut the driveshaft. After thinking about it I'm fine. I just went through this with the 49. Remember the leaf spring in the rear have the pins set 2 inches forward. It has 3" lower blocks on the back. I'll yank them and weld me a 1/8 piece of metal with a pin hole in it where I need it to move the rear end back. Driveshaft issues will then be solved! See what I mean about the rear wheels. I guess they didn't know about that 2" offset pin.

Is that not just perfect? Even the color. I end up getting the 54 I always wanted but not only does it look like it was beat with the ugly stick it looks like the whole ugly tree fell on itChris55 wrote:some inspiration.

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
If I can find a trunk lid I'll open it up. If I get to the back and can't find one then I have some ideas. I'd love to have a set of cruiser skirts. I may try to make something for it. I know I can't afford a set. They are through the roof. Matters how things go with the rest of it.big dogs 42 wrote:I please open up that deck lid the way its suppose to be looks like something out of the 30s with a rumble seat just dosent fit the year of the car to me . needs a set of fiberglass cruiser skirts also!)

Re: 1954 Chevy Dead Sled
It could be worse, look at this mess.
Found a few other ideas.
This looks kinda like the one you had in mind
Yes I know this isn't a 54.
Not so sure about this one.
