1986 Porsche 944 not your dads VW
I know, this is not what we think of as a hot rod....but it is to me! 4cly motor in the front, a long torque tube taking that power to the rear, to the transmission, looks like a VW tranny in the back, that allows a 50-50 weight transfer, handles like a cat at 90 around the turns....Plus they can be had from 2000-5000 for a NICE car, Leather, Loaded and 25 MPG to boot....

Just found a 85' 944 for $1700, needs a clutch. That clutch happens to be $700

Can be had much cheaper!!! you can get them for 400-500 about anywhere, just gotta look...

I found a clutch for around $430 if I can remember right. Think it was eBay.
