Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
Glass was out and time for some firewall welding to cover up the big hole left from the shock towers.
Corey bending the metal to make a tight fit for the welder.
While this was going on the work on the rearend got started. Cleaning the rearend from any rust or grunge it had on the inside. It was talked about and the spring perches were ground off and moved to the top of the rearend to give it more room for the 10" wide tires.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
I gave 'Dog the grinder with the cut off wheel and told him to be carefull."If ya hit it wrong it can break and shoot through your jugular vain in your neck and you are done!" He went through one wheel and ask for another. I heard the grinding stop and he was rubing his neck. I thought he was joking around but nooo! The cut off wheel broke send pieces flying through the garage. It must have just nicked his skin 'cause I didn't see a cut but It freak him out I bet. lol.. Glad your okay Dog!
It seemed everyone was getting a little too into their work so Doug figured he'd break the ice by blowing in Coles ear.
Cole didn't seem to be liking it much so he moved on to Terry. (note the look on Terry's face )

I popped in another new movie I got(Yanks Tanks) about the cars in Cuba. Great flick by the way. As you can see some of the guys liked it too.
Little more work on the rearend and it was ready for the 390 pig.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
Ronnie set the rearend up so it was at the right angle and then I was ready to do my super weld job!
The weld just balled up. Man! what gives? I screwed with it enough to get it to stick then stopped.
Slowing down to take a breath and then heading in to watch Speed TV and eat some more pizza.
We kicked back in the living room thanks to Amy covering the couches with sheets and done some bench racing for a while. While Big Dog was talking about a crank welding itself to a rod I got to thinking about that weld. I let it out "I know what's wrong with the welder!".... We rapped up the night and a was getting ready to get cleaned up but I couldn't. Back out to the garage. I yanked the rearend back out and cleaned up the welding spot. took off the long orange cord we had plugged it into and plugged it directly in the outlet. I then finished the weld on the perches and the welded up like they should have. The cord was robbing the power.

Thanks a ton for coming guys I had a blast! Even our work session can turn into a mini party.
6 big pizzas

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
For the ones that wasn't there, we could have hung the rearend back in the car but the spring plates on the old rearend was too small to work. I had stopped and bought two but they were wrong too. I figured I'd have to drive to Dayton Ohio to see if Jeff found some he thought he had but good luck was with us this morning. Me and Aryan jumped in the 49 and drove out in the county to a hardware store hoping they may have two for a trailer or something. They didn't. On the way back we stopped out at the other property. Walking around talking on the phone with Johnny Bennett, he didn't have any either by the way we found some. Over in the woods in the bush I seen a shock sticking out of the ground. I walked over and started yanking, pop! out it came with the plate on the bottom of it! A little searching came up with two! Now we are ready to mount the rearend.
I forgot about the parts washer even being in the garage. Most of the time it's used for a table. I wish we would have tossed the backing plates in there when we first started that day. I got 'em cleaned up and put them back on the rearend. We may change them out when we find another rearend to rob the drums and stuff off of.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
The day after the work session Aryan and Corey came out to help. here Corey is tossing on some part over the bare metal.
We slid the rearend back under the car and Corey started bolting it up. I used the grinder to cut the head off the U bolts and that when Aryan had to go back in the house because he was worried about getting hit again with spark. If you wasn't there My youngest got it with some grinder sparks from me. He didn't like it much. Poor kid. I was teasing him about after he came back in from the house. I told him that that was his first babtism in fire and it won't be the last if he works on cars. He just smiled, he wants no part of that grinder.
rear is in.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
This is where it gets strange. We talked about how low the car sat in the rearend. With 28" tall and 10.5" wide slicks it would put the top of the tire where the center of the body line is. With only 8" max room inside the fenderwells there was a cause to either cut the fenderswells out so they would stick out or ditch the tire /rim combo we have and buy 2 more slicks(smaller) and get a set of rims we could cut the center and put the perfect offset to squeeze a 8" wide slick inside. $$ is the factor on most of this car so we went with the cut the 1/4's way.
WELL??? with flipping the axel we won't have to cut the quarter all the way up to that body line. just enough to make the hole round and to give up the clearance we need , right?
How much do you think a flip would raise the car? here it is before.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
And now. No need to cut anything....
I sat last night scratching my head trying to figure out if I like it or not. I;m not sure what to think. it will work there as for as running but she's sky high for sure. what do you guys think? drop it down and cut the 1/4's or leave it alone. The front end will have to be lifted up when the 460 goes in. right now the front sits about an 1" higher but with the engine in it will sink.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
The rearend set up side to side is perfect! The rims stick out a little farther than I wanted them too but we have 11" wide thanks to the balooned side walls. 3" are sticking out and the other 8" are tucked inside the fenderwell nicely and even has room for the slicks to swell. The stretched tires that are on the rims now are not the slicks. The slick are the same width but are just shy of 2" taller so the top of the tire will be another 1" closer to the fenderwell lip but I think it will clear even with a take off and the slick swell. I hope that made since to everyone.

One thing we need bad is 20 long shank 1/2 lug nuts for these mags, if we use them. Anyone want to spring for the cost of them? You can get them at Advance for a buck a piece. Any takers? Do we want to run these mags???

Sounds good to me unless someone else doesn't like the look, speak up soon.
Thanks a ton 'Dog for the lug nuts. It helps out a lot!!!! Nickel and dime from a few hands help out in a big way instead of it all coming out of one hand. I'll pick 'em up when I get out to the store today.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
Yes, set of slots. They have tires but they are not the greatest. They are a little wide for a gasser. A skinny set of 75/'s would look good on them. At least with the lug nuts we can get a set of rims on her. She's looking more like a car now. I will be messing with it a little at nights if anyone want to stop by. It will be leaving this garage after this week though and on hold till everyone wants to do it again.JRiggs wrote:is their front rims also...

I'll be watching this one as you go. If theres' anything I can get for you let me know. What size 75's do you need 14 or 15". I may have a lead on some. If you need a lending hand I'm free most weekends. All I'm doing now is running pipe to the garage.

Re: Scroungers C.C. 1964 Falcon Drag Car
I played with the gasser some today. I drilled the trunk for two of the 4 hood pins and put it on. I sanded on the door for a while. This car is a little rougher than I thought. It's been painted a few times and it's cracking and splitting from the second coat so it's through the third one too. As if the cracks, scratches and blistering wasn't bad enough, someone took some of the chrome off with a grinder. I ended up sanding a lot of the door to bare metal to get the bad stuff out. Also I had to weld up the corner of the door where it was ripped from someone ripping the chrome off.
I was going to just spot weld the panels where the shock towers use to be but after thinking about it, I figured it needed to be as strong as we could make it. I finished up Cole and Terry's work and welded it all up. I also cut out the rot from where the battery was and replaced it.
