Re: Desoto
Got the manifolds how I wanted. Pretty amazing how little metal you have to take off to make a big difference.
It's hard to tell, but that is next to the frame. Before it sat on top of the frame.
I got the transmission bolted up!
Now there is plenty of room for the radiator in the stock position!
I was tired of the teeth, splash pan, and bumper sitting in the shed. So I put them on.
All I need to do is get the angle iron cut to finish the motor mounts. Then get a trans support bar made. I check my drive shaft and it's longer than I need which is a good thing.
Then wiring and brakes and tires.
I hope to have it on the road this spring!

Re: Desoto
Keep up the good work! Nice to see things coming along on this and that was a good call to put the front end pieces back on.

Looking really good. Hows the welder doing? Does it seem strong enough?

Re: Desoto
I'll be honest. They seem strong, but I would like for someone to look at them. I didn't feel like I was getting much penetration into the frame. I've welded a few things before this where I could tell both pieces took the weld. It's a bit harder to tell with where this is located.

Re: Desoto
I would go with something stronger than 1x1 tube for the trans mount. It looks like it is bowing already.

Re: Desoto
Yeah. Remember that it is better to overbuild in a situation like this than just hope it will work. Dropping the tranny at 80mph is kind of a bad thing ya know? I would use at least thick walled 1x2, or preferably 2x2 with a nice solid perch. That's a pretty long span there and one heavy pig of a motor & trans, so make sure your brackets are beefy as well.

Re: Desoto
What do you need welded? Is it the brackets to the frame or the mount itself? If its the mount bring it out I will weld it up I'm in burlington.. Are you using Argon/Shielded Gas Or just old Farm grade flux core?.. I have a 220v mig out here that I can take care of ya with if you need, let me know.. Keep up the progress...

Yea... I got done with it, happy that it was off the ground but not happy with what I saw. Thanks for the advice of what to use.
Can anyone around here tell me where I can find some 2x2 steel?

I was told to try out what I had, flux core. I need help welding brackets to the frame. So I can't bring it to you, and the only 220 I have is behind my dryer.
So I need some help/thoughts to go from here.
Not in a huge rush as the colder weather is pending. But it would be nice to have the mounts done. When they are complete, I can do some small wiring things etc. on good sunny days even if it's cold out. I know I probably could do some wiring now, but don't really want to till I know the motor and trans are set.

Re: Desoto
Flux core is ok in a pinch, don't get me wrong, its just a more brittle weld, and with a 110 set up and flux core your probabaly not gonna get the proper penetration needed. I am sure some will argue this but I would'nt trust a key part to a weld that was done with a flux core.. Just my .02 maybe others will chime in and say they have had luck with a flux core welds that have lasted. But I have seen some real shotty welding done with flux core. Maybe we can figure out something my welder is'nt that heavy that i cant put it in the back of my truck aslong as we have some 220 , and a couple of bucks to throw into the ARGON kitty..

Not a problem for sure!LRS30 wrote: and a couple of bucks to throw into the ARGON kitty..

Re: Desoto
After looking at the pics again a little better it does have a bow to it. With the engine mounts all the way to the front of the block it is carring a lot of wieght. I don't have anything down here other than 2X4. Look at Lowes and Sears and see what they have.

Re: Desoto
Levine over on River Rd will cut you a piece. Just tell them what size you need. Watch wall thickness. Don't get something real thin walled. I have been able to get stuff cut off before and pay them by the foot. I may have just gotten lucky. Even if they make you buy a 10' stick it would be cheaper or almost as cheap as buying a 4' stick from Sears.

Re: Desoto
Thanks Steve. I'll check them out.
I'd like to be able to drop the bar for when I have to work on the car in the future. Or... would it be better to just weld the bar directly to the frame and be done with it?

Re: Desoto
You need to make a shelf for it to sit on. There will be no way to get the engine and trans out of the car without being able to unbolt the cross member and get the tail shaft to drop.

Re: Desoto
I could use some help tomorrow around 11am moving the DeSoto. I went in halves with Steve on a garage and want to get it moved in there. Butch is coming by with his truck and a tow bar (as the DeSoto has no brakes) to tow it the 2 blocks to the garage.
We could use a couple of hands to push the DeSoto into my alley and then from the new alley into the garage.
Steve, could Corey be available to help? I thought that he and I could get the cabinets from Riggs at the same time. Either a little before we move the car or after.
